My wife and I got married back in 2001. As many other couples we wanted children. However we soon discovered that it was easier said than done.
We visited specialists in two different countries. After tests the verdict were the same: Getting pregnant naturally, was highly unlikely. The doctors stated odds of 1:100 000.
We began to talk about adopting or artificial methods. However after some thought I stated to my wife:
God is bigger than life. If He wants us to have children, odds of 1:100 000 is nothing.
The turning point
A few months went by. One day while we were shopping my wife told me: You need to buy me flowers. “Mmmkay”, I thought. “She never says that, but when she asks, I need to get her really nice flowers”.
After delivering her a big nice bouquet she handed me back a small plastic bag. Inside I spotted something that looked like a thermometer. “You’re going to be a daddy”, my wife smiled.
Wow, I couldn’t believe it. Neither couldn’t our treating specialist. His mouth almost literally floored when he took a pregnancy test to see for himself.
Not in the clear
However we weren’t in the clear. There were complications both at the beginning and end of the pregnancy. The birth was very hard. My wife was so weak, that I got seriously concerned. It all ended with the doctors sprinting out of the room with our new baby, to save him.
But God stood with us. After some minutes I could carry a nice baby boy back to my wife. I have never seen someone glow like my wife did then. It was like light glowing out of her skin.
But wait, the story gets more amazing
After a couple of years we wanted more children. And the story repeated: Nothing came. After the same round to specialists in two countries, the feedback was even more devastating:
You can forget about natural pregnancy. There is 0 activity. The odds are 1:30 millions.
I still remember the talk my wife and I had after. Adoption again became a subject. And again I refused stating:
God is greater than life. If He could give us one child, He can give us two. 0 activity or not.
And this incredible true miracle happen, again. Just as my father passed away it happen. My second son crossed odds of 1:30 millions, embraced life and came to us.
“Gift of God”
My first son felt very strong for a specific name for his brother. He wouldn’t cave in to our denials. He wanted his brother to be named “Teodor”. After a while we agreed. Later we discovered that the name meant “The gift of God”. What a fitting name.
Later my wife again met our treating specialist, and he was awed learning about the second birth. Now this is a doctor that sees these kind of cases day in and day out. That he is amazed by the story says something.
And he should be awed, like we are, because the combined odds against our two children happen is 1:3 000 000 000 000. So the odds are overwhelming that there does not exist two brothers like our sons on earth today.
It’s easy to give thanks to God, when just a small gaze on our sons reminds us of such a story.
